Though the nut has the look of a tough one to crack, kernel recompilation is still an inescapable affair that every Linux system administrator runs into, sooner or later. I too had to.
With this article, I intend to walk you through the phases of compiling a kernel. I am sure it will inspire confidence in you so that compiling a kernel is no longer a "mission impossible".

In Superman III Richard Pryor is a computer programmer; he wonders where all those ½ cents at the end of payroll checks go. He puts them to good use...his paycheck.

Charles WU - head honcho at CW Labs made one of those ISPCON luncheon presentations that was actually interesting. In the middle of it I thought...this guy looked at something boring...and saw billions. All of a sudden it became very interesting.

Unbeknownst to us he noted the slow death of dial-up. But sees dollars in that slow bandwidth...forget 56k...he likes 28k. Forget something in the future that may not work like 500 HDTV channels over the Internet, R&D is always a *itch...lets make some money.

During the presentation Charles used the word trillion...his graphics showed a bunch of lines connecting each other, sort of like a half circle, with arrows going back and forth. His R&D staff has invented some stuff, they want to put the ISP in this graphic. Somewhere near the top left, second dot down. He called it the money spot.

Charles WU wants to put the ISP in the credit card processing system. He wants you to be part of that trillion dollar economy, the part that takes a ½% here and ½% there. Swipe that card and a bunch of people takes a slice of that swipe…someone has to do it.

Talk to WU if you want to understand the technical part, not my area. However there is hardware, software, intellectual property, licensing and other stuff involved.

In the evening Wu kindly gave away food and drinks as we gambled at a charity event. Everyone was happy.

Google Search Ranking Secrets Revealed

Wouldn't it be great to understand exactly how Google decides to rank websites? And wouldn't it be even better if the information on Google search rankings came from a true ''insider'' at Google? Well if the Google blog is to be believed, the company has begun an effort to do just that. Udi Manber, a Vice President of Engineering at Google is part of the team called 'Search Quality'. Search Quality is the name of the team responsible for the ranking of Google search results. That is, when you type a search query into the search box at Google and hit enter, the Search Quality team is responsible to decide within a fraction of a second which among the billions of pages on the web to display, and in what order.

So according to this post in the Official Google Blog, the company has decided to share more information with those outside Google about exactly how its search rankings are determined. As anyone who has tried to get a website ranked at Google for any relatively popular term can tell you, the exact process of how Google ranks pages has been intentionally shrouded in mystery since the company was founded. However, in the blog post Mr. Manber declares, ''But being completely secretive isn't ideal, and this blog post is part of a renewed effort to open up a bit more than we have in the past. We will try to periodically tell you about new things, explain old things, give advice, spread news, and engage in conversations. Let me start with some general pieces of information about our group. More blog posts will follow.''

The rest of the piece doesn't reveal anything particularly new about the ranking process.

So why on earth would Google be telling us about how rankings are formulated? And why do it now? What is to be gained?

Perhaps as the company has become nearly monopolistic in search, there is added pressure to assure the outside world that the search results are truly independent of any internal manipulation. It's no secret that a top Google ranking for a highly trafficked term, for instance ''web hosting'', is worth thousands of dollars per day. There is also the prestige and brand equity that comes with a number one ranking at Google.

So how do we know that Google's ranking system is ''fair''?

We don't. For all we know, influential insiders at Google have sent around an internal memo that reads in part, ''When in doubt, just put the Wikipedia entry for the search term at the top of the results...''. Of course that's not what would lead to the most relevant search results, but then again the search industry is completely unregulated. If Google wanted to, they could rank www.thewhir.com as the number one result for ''web hosting''. So why don't they?

Perhaps Mr. Manber's next blog post will shed some light on that subject.

HostingCon - Be on My M&A Panel

I am moderating a panel at HostingCon entitled "Flip that Hosting Company" (Wed. July 30 - 4:15 PM). I want to have at least one panel member from our WHIR readers.

So be on my panel. If you think you are up to it, there are just a couple of hoops to jump through.

1 - Requirements: During the last 5 years you should have completed at least 3 acquisitions, your current position is either in senior management, or you are responsible for business development for an operating hosting firm.

2 - How to apply - send me an e-mail that includes:

A - Your Name/Company/Title/Phone and link to your website.

B - Write a couple of paragraphs on what you bring to the table. How you will add value for HostingCon attendees and a snippet of your background.

C - A paragraph regarding a specific point you look at (or reared its ugly head) during an acquisition, and why it was important to your decision making process.

Brevity and succinctness are virtues.

Maximizing Your Mindshare (and Wallet Share) in the New World of SaaS

I really like SMBLive CEO Matt Howard's way of looking at software as a service. (Some argue that we should start calling it software enabled service.) Matt says running a business is all about maintaining "5 conversations": with oneself, co-workers, external partners (vendors/contractors/distributors), customers and the general public. So ideally, web apps should facilitate personal productivity,
collaboration, vendor management, CRM and sales/marketing.

Traditionally, hosting providers have focused on helping customers maintain a web presence - which only fulfills 20% of the functionalities Matt describes. So I thought it was pretty awesome when Barbara Branaman mentioned that Concentric is in the process of integrating its new collaboration service with its clustered hosting and email solutions. I said the unified offering should help Concentric increase mindshare. Barbara said also importantly, it will boost wallet share. The goal is to earn a larger slice of more customers' IT budgets.

Barbara will need to keep a close eye on Google, whose Apps Premier cover about half of the 5 conversations. Remember last December's headlines about Microsoft battling Gmail for corporate workers' attention? It seems Redmond faces an even tougher challenge with respect to productivity apps: Ars Technica reported yesterday that Google Docs and Spreadsheet account for a 92% share of unique visitors, and 95% of the amount of time spent. I'm not impressed with Google Pages, but Blogger is pretty popular. I'm sure sooner or later both will be rolled into Google Apps, along with Google Base.

Meanwhile, have you heard about eBay's new partnerships with ERP/CRM provider NetSuite (spotted via Mark Crofton's blog) and popular social network Bebo? And SalesForce is looking to build a "circle of success" around its CRM app; David Berlind says their odds are decent.

Earlier David Snead asked via a comment on an earlier post whether easy interoperability between different vendors' apps will obviate the need for hosting providers to customize services for any audience. Based on Rodney Loges' experience, I think the answer is no.

Rodney (who was instrumental in digitalNATION's $100 million sale to Verio as well as Rackspace's launch of its Intensive service) has transformed his company from a web development firm into a SaaS provider by assembling a suite of best-of-breed content management, web analytics, collaboration, etc, tools for associations and non-profits. Each hand-picked application meets specific requirements that his customers share. I think that's what it takes to win in SaaS/SES - of which hosting is just a small percent. In other words, the key is customer segmentation.
